1996-97 Hartford Whalers Complete Season Tickets Booklet. Complete unused season tickets from the Whalers last year in the NHL. During the 1996-97 season, the 1st game of the season the Whalers played the Phoenix Coyotes, which was the coyotes 1st NHL hockey game after relocating from Winnipeg, On April 13, 1997, the Whalers franchise would play their last game in Hartford, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1. Captain Kevin Dineen would score the final goal in Whalers history. The final words from the play by play voice John Forslund at the end of the game were as follows: "It's over folks, it's been a great ride. The Whalers will go out, winners".
