AJ Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025 Edition
County Stadium Milwaukee Wisconsin Genuine Box Seat Chairs
County Stadium was built in Milwaukee during the early 1950s in an effort to attract a major league baseball team. The city was immediately rewarded when the Boston Braves relocated to the Midwest in time for the 1953 season. The following year, Hank Aaron arrived for his rookie season, joining Eddie Mathews and Warren Spahn on a team destined to become World Series champions by 1957. All three Hall of Famers enjoyed their peak seasons in Milwaukee, and this wooden seat pair was there to witness everything they did. The Braves left town for Atlanta in 1966 but the ballpark wasn't left without baseball for long. After hosting some White Sox games in the late 1960s, County had a new tenant by 1970, when the expansion Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee after just one season on the west coast. The Brewers played at County for three decades, appearing in their only World Series in 1982. The team moved to adjacent Miller Park in 2001.
The vast majority of the original wooden seats had been replaced by plastic long before the stadium closed. The remaining originals were confined to a few sections in the upper deck, beneath the overhang, behind home plate. They had been allowed to decay, appearing not to have been repainted for decades—that's Selig ownership. Nevertheless, the wooden survivors were considered the only County seats of value to collectors. This pair was purchased directly from the team around the time of demolition. They have been kept indoors ever since.
An authentication plaque from collectible seats pioneer Mike Seitz is discreetly attached.
