One of the most popular players to ever skate in the NHL, McDonald played 16 consistent seasons, reaching both the 500-goal and 1000-point plateaus. Praised for his off-ice work with the Special Olympics, he was the winner of the NHL's King Clancy Memorial Trophy awarded for leadership and community service. He was co-captain of the Calgary Flames when the club won the Stanley Cup in 1989. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
